"Little whirlpools out in the middle of the ocean" - an exhibition presented at Music.Design.Form
On September 23, on the second day of the Music.Design.Form festival, we invite you to the Level 4 Gallery at 20:00 to the exhibition "Little whirlpools out in the middle of the ocean".
The exhibition's title was taken from the minimalist composition La Monte Young's minimalist composition, Composition 1960 No. 15 (9:05 AM, December 25) – one of the legendary works created as an idea, realized in the author's imagination and the recipient. Of course, the very creation of the "little whirlpools out in the middle of the ocean" happens, although usually without human participation, which emphasizes its poetic and ephemeral significance, also pointing to the aspect of the absence and disappearance of man.
Minimalism was one of the last movements of the 20th-century avant-garde march that changed the history of the visual arts. Frank Stella's words, "What you see is what you see", have become minimalists' motto, rejecting the context and emphasizing reading the work "straightforward". Drawing this lesson with complete consistency, the material work of art was no longer needed. Nevertheless, primarily through the commercial sale of minimalist pieces, it was fetishized. In turn, recently, post-minimalist aesthetics has dominated the world of art and lifestyle, ranging from design to the populist version of wabi-sabi or zen 'shortcuts' guides.
In art, especially thanks to the reduction in the formal and semantic sense, minimalism began to gain relevance in the context of the climate crisis and overpopulation of the planet, fatigue with information overload or appreciating the value of error and chance as a source of knowledge.
Therefore, the exhibition will present works that may seem far from minimalism or are critical of the commercial abuse of this aesthetic at first glance. The "organizing" point is the six works of the artists – six chapters of the exhibition – lexically showing several "rules" regulating the "grammar" of works or based on minimal art.
