Monika Borzym – I am Space

“Jestem przestrzeń” is the title of Monika Borzym's album, with moving lyrics by Anna Świrszczyńska to which Mariusz Obijalski wrote the music. Świrszczyńska (1909-1984), a poet, made her debut in the 1930s, and in the 1970s made a feminist breakthrough in Polish poetry, creating her own language deprived of all metaphors, for the first time speaking so openly about women's feelings.

Świrszczyńska was also a nurse in the Warsaw Uprising. To formulate her dramatic experiences from this period on paper, she needed thirty years, publishing them in the volume "Budowałam barykadę" (“I was building a barricade”) from 1974, from which the texts used on the CD issued by the Warsaw Uprising Museum come from.

A charismatic jazz vocalist of the younger generation, Monika Borzym has taken up work on this uneasy extremely moving, and because of the literality and intensity of the description, almost exhibitionist material. The album features real jazz stars: Mitchell Long, Sebastian Studnitzky, John Scofield and Wojciech Waglewski. The recording of the vocalist was accompanied by such outstanding instrumentalists as Atom String Quartet, Mariusz Obijalski, Robert Kubiszyn and Hubert Zemler. During the concert, Monika Borzym will present material from the album in arrangements for the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra.
