We will begin the evening with the Concert Overture in E major, Op. 12
- an expressive, youthful piece by Szymanowski. It will be a prelude to the Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 35
, a work much more mature. Violin Concerto No. 1 is a highly innovative piece in which Szymanowski broke with his romantic heritage, replacing "drama" with an unusual intensity of emotions typical of expressionism.
We will end the evening with Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19 2a
, widely regarded as the most outstanding orchestral work of young Szymanowski and one of the greatest achievements of Polish symphonic music. Although the composer was very proud of this symphony, he returned to it many times during his life. He improved the instrumentation of the first movement, while the second movement, as Szymanowski himself wished, was re-instrumented by Grzegorz Fitelberg in 1934-36.
